Questions to Ask Yourself When Planning Laundry Room Renovation

Thinking about a laundry room renovation? Beginning to plan your dream laundry room? Here are some helpful questions you can ask yourself while you begin the process of planning your laundry room remodel.

What is your budget?

Before you start planning the finer details, you should come up with a reasonable budget for your laundry room renovation. A basic renovation which includes painting, flooring, and a few other things could cost just a few thousand dollars, while a full remodel with new appliances, lighting, and custom cabinetry could easily cost much more.

Is this part of a larger home renovation project?

Another important thing to consider when you start planning a renovation project is, is this project going to stand on its own? Or do you want to integrate it with other home renovations? For example, you could also remodel the mudroom outside of your laundry room, or other utility areas in your home if some of the walls are already going to be opened, or if plumbing or wiring is being altered.

Some past customers have us renovate a bathroom for their basement bathroom or second-floor bathroom if their laundry room is nearby. Having two home renovations taking place in proximity can help reduce costs a bit.

Functionality requirements – how (and how often) do you do laundry?

This may seem like a silly thing to ask, but you should consider all the following factors:

• Do you do laundry daily or semi-daily, or it is a weekly or bi-weekly task?
• Do you have a large family and need multiple hampers? A sorting system?
• Do you fold laundry in the laundry room, where an island, counter, or table could be useful?
• Do you have enough storage space for laundry and associated tools & supplies?
• Do you need a multi-purpose space with things like a dog/cat space, a pet or child washing station, a bathroom, and a closet, or just additional storage space?
• Do you need space to iron clothes or hang/line-dry laundry?
• Do you want to relocate your laundry room from its current location?
• If you’re thinking about replacing your washer or dryer in the future – make sure your laundry room door is wide enough to get your old machines out and new machines in!

These are all things that could impact your project – and influence the design of your laundry room. We recommend thinking them through, and making a list of your “needs,” and your “wants” for your project.

How much space do you have to work with? Do you need more?

Do you have enough space in your laundry room? If you want to expand it, can you steal square footage from an adjacent room, or is it necessary to create an addition to the existing space? Adding more space to your laundry room is a great way to enhance its utility and make laundry more convenient.

Do your lighting, flooring, windows, and appliances work for your needs?

Replacing your lighting, redoing your flooring, and adding more windows can dramatically change the appearance and functionality of your laundry room, but these changes can be expensive. Consider that when planning your laundry room renovation.

In addition, think about your current laundry appliances. Do you want to keep them? How will they fit into the renovated space? Is it time to shop for new ones? Do you prefer stacked, side-by-side, or platform laundry machines? Will you add more appliances and fixtures, such as a wine cooler, a second fridge, or a utility sink?

How will you manage laundry during the renovation process?

Finally, you’ll need to think about how you’ll do laundry during the renovation process. The laundromat is an obvious choice but is not always convenient. You can also ask around and see if friends and family will let you do laundry at their homes.

The most expensive – but most convenient – option is to hire a laundry service. For a week or two, you can hire a service to pick up, wash, fold, and drop off your laundry. It’s a luxury, but it may be worth it if you’re already managing a home remodel and don’t have much time to spare.
