Spring home maintenance in Winnipeg and Manitoba

Spring is that time of year when we give our homes the once over and assess any winter damage, figure out what needs to be done, and schedule renovation or upgrades to our homes. Spring is also a great time of year to plan out your home renovation projects for the year once you take stock of your housing condition.

And if you see things that need attention – you can always contact us for those repairs! 

Use the checklist below to get your home spring-ready:

SAFETY

  • Install new batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors (important to do monthly testing),
  • Dust and test all detectors,
  • Check fire extinguishers (at least once a month),
  • Check and reset the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI),

MECHANICS & SYSTEMS

  • Clean or replace the furnace filter and heat recovery ventilator (HRV),
  • Check the water heater for leaks (if the unit or tank, if it is older than 5 years schedule an inspection),
  • Clean humidifier (should be done on a monthly basis),
  • Check sump pump and sewer backup value (if installed) – consider a battery backup too,
  • Schedule or inspect the air-conditioning equipment,
  • Get the air-conditioner drained professionally cleaned,
  • Clean your outdoor dryer vent and make sure exhaust ducts are unobstructed,
  • Schedule a maintenance and/or energy efficiency inspection,

KITCHEN & BATHROOM

  • Inspect bathroom and kitchen caulking. Re-caulk as needed,
  • Test and clean kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans,
  • Clean kitchen exhaust hood and filter,
  • Vacuum refrigerator coils,
  • Is everything looking tired and old? Perhaps it’s time for a kitchen renovation?

EXTERIOR

  • Inspect foundation, basement, or crawl spaces (check for cracks and leaks and address them now before they get worse),
  • Inspect any outdoor structures for damage and repairs, like sheds and garages,
  • Check and clean gutters, eavestrough, and downspouts (check for leaks, make sure they are attached securely and clear of debris),
  • Check exterior finishes (paint, stain and touch up as needed),
  • Check siding and masonry for damage and schedule repairs, like repointing if needed,
  • Remove storm windows and screens,
  • Turn on the exterior water supply,
  • Check the grading around your home and watch for water pooling
  • Inspect driveway and paths for frost damage,
  • Inspect fences, especially around pools, to ensure the latch is in working order, and schedule a pool inspection,
  • Schedule deck inspection,
  • Clean and seal deck (if needed, apx. every two years),

ROOF & ATTIC

  • Check the roof for damage from the winter (look for loose or curled and cracked shingles),
  • Check the attic for leaks, mould, moisture intrusion, fire hazards, and critters,
  • Install new batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors (important to do monthly testing).

After a long cold Manitoba winter like we just had, we all need to take stock of our house needs and see what repairs are needed from the damaging effects of snow and cold.
